Friday April 2, 2021:
Hello Blackhawk Parents and Student-Athletes,
Recently, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) announced that all spring sport athletes will need to be tested once per week for COVID-19 in order to actively participate in school sponsored athletics. These COVID-19 tests will be administered to all high school and middle school athletes competing for the Brandon School District starting the week of April 5th. The purpose of this communication is to inform you of our plan and the necessary steps that need to be taken by parents and student-athletes prior to the testing.
All parents and student-athletes will need to complete the mandatory Participant Code of Conduct and Registration and Consent to Testing Form from the Michigan Department of Human Services. This is for all current high school Spring sports teams, middle school 7/8 Boys Basketball and MS Bowling teams. Both forms must be completed, signed and returned by Tuesday April 6th! Note- Middle School spring sports athletes, such as Baseball, Softball and Track will need the forms completed and collected before April 11th. These forms can also be found on the MHSAA website under Health & Safety tab (HERE) or hard copies will be distributed to your athlete at practice on Monday April 5th.
Previous Positive Test:
If your student athlete has previously tested positive with a molecular PCR test, they are exempt from the COVID-19 testing for 90 days from that positive result. You will be required to provide documentation to the athletic office in this instance for us to have on file and determine the expiration of that 90 day window.
Testing Dates, Times and Locations:
Due to the amount of athletes who do not have their paperwork completed yet, we will spread the initial testing out over three days, April 5, 6, and 7. We will begin testing in the afternoons on these three days and try to reduce the amount of interruption to classes and practices. Click- Spring Sports Antigen Testing Schedule- 2021
Type of Test Being Administered:
The test that is mandated through this program is a rapid antigen test that takes 15 minutes to produce a result. The name of the test is BinaxNOW COVID Antigen Test and it is from Abbott Laboratories. This test is a non-invasive nasal test where the student athletes will be given a swab and be asked to swab the inside of each nostril without going past the bridge of the nose.
This testing schedule is fluid and subject to change in order to best meet the needs of our student-athletes; we will continue to re-evaluate throughout the testing process. Please remember, the testing of all of our athletes is a mandated process from the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services in order for our school athletic programs to continue having the opportunity to play. We will continue to work very hard to comply with the requirements of the MDHHS & MHSAA in order to ensure that the health and safety of our athletes and their families is our top priority. We would like to thank all of our Blackhawk athletes and families for your cooperation and support with these new testing requirements! If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact the athletic office.
Sincerely Yours in Educational Athletics,
Chris Deines, RAA – Brandon School District Athletic Director
