The Brandon Varsity Football team is 4-2 after six weeks of action in the 2017 season and headed down the home stretch! The Blackhawks have a huge week 7 match up against a very good 5-1 Linden team at Linden this Friday at 7:00. This match up will have major playoff implications just as it has had the past two seasons.
The injury bug has hit the Blackhawks hard this season. Losing our senior captain and two way star Bryce Chamberlain in our season opener at Michigan against Fenton was extremely difficult.Bryce had a heroic performance against Fenton finishing the game on one arm. Our team has not backed down though and has used the next man up philosophy to the fullest this season as new guys continue to step up every week!
The Blackhawks have been lead this year by a very experienced and hard nosed group on the offensive line. Starters Matt Hill, Ryan Beauchamp, Ean Thompson, Anthony Nicaj, and Jarred Everett have played great. This group has pushed our season rushing totals over 2000 yards in just 6 games.
Senior quarterback Kevin Grigereit continues to lead our offense in his usual cool and collected manner. KG has thrown for 725 yards and 9 touchdowns so far this season while running our no huddle up tempo offense and getting all of our skill players in position to be successful.
We have seen major contributions from several skill players all season long. After 6 games Sincere Perkins is leading us in Rushing and Receiving yards 618/319 and 13 total touchdowns. Clay Deboer had racked up 407 yards rushing before being sidelined the past two weeks with a knee injury. We are hoping to get Clay back on the field real soon! Sophomore Adrien Williams has filled in great for Clay putting up nearly 300 yards of rushing in our back to back wins against Owosso and Clio. Senior Josh Manfroni continues to be a dual threat each and every week for the Blackhawks. His 12 catches lead all Brandon receivers and have accounted for 232 yards and 2 touchdowns. Josh has also kicked in 153 yards rushing averaging 9 yards a carry and scoring three more touchdowns. The Blackhawks have also seen major offensive contributions this year from Gage Difalco, Jacob Irwin, and Mathew Harrison.
Our offense is averaging 44 points a game and the last three weeks have posted 54, 69, and 65 point efforts while racking up major yardage
Our young defense is learning to play together and working hard to get better each week. We have been plugging and playing new guys in the line up each week trying to find the right combination. Our defense has been lead this fall by Junior Linebacker Mike Nicaj who is returning from a First Team All League 2016 campaign. Mike is pacing the defense with 58 total tackles and 3 sacks. Josh Manfroni has made a major impact in the secondary leading that group with 18 tackles, 1 sack, and 2 interceptions including a big pick six to swing the momentum at Clio last week. Clay Hendershott has been a steadying force on the defensive line this fall accounting for 31 tackles to lead that group. Other Blackhawks helping to lead the defense this fall have been Gage Difalco, Jacob Irwin, Devin Krauss, Clay Deboer, Cooper Hickmott, Curtis Venturino, Mathew Harrison, and Brendan McCluskey.
After this week’s game at Linden we return home for senior night against Holly on October 13th and close out the regular season on the road at Swartz Creek. Please come out and support the Blackhawks as we make our push for the 2017 MHSAA playoffs.
